Blackmagic Design SmartView 4K G3 features optical and copper SMPTE-2110 IP video connections for direct integration with IP-based broadcast systems, along with two 12G-SDI inputs for professional video equipment. Both 12G-SDI and 2110 inputs offer a 12G-SDI loop output. The lightweight machined aluminium chassis houses a full-resolution Ultra HD LCD. On-screen overlays include focus peaking, framing guides, and safe areas, while built-in 3D LUTs support creative looks, log film gamma conversion, and custom HDR profiles.
SmartView 4K features a durable machined aluminium design with sleek, clean lines and a deep black anodized finish, complementing other Blackmagic Design equipment in racks. Its slim profile, just a few inches deep, allows better ventilation when mounted at the top of racks. The front has easy-to-press, slightly tilted button controls, while the rear offers all video connections and a VESA mounting point.
The SmartView 4K LCD offers ultra-high resolution for a clean, detailed image with excellent colour fidelity. To avoid fingerprints, controls are located along the bottom, allowing adjustments without touching the screen. Designed for broadcast, it instantly locks to new video sources, even when connected to a router with changing inputs. Unlike TVs, it displays the entire image without overscanning, ensuring every pixel is visible to the edge.
The input button switches between the two 12G-SDI and 2110 IP inputs. The display button adjusts brightness, while H/V display shows image blanking. Blue only mode helps check hue for SD content. The zoom button aids in focus adjustments, and peaking highlights sharp details. The 3D LUT buttons enable and switch between LUTs, and the H/V marker buttons display and adjust up to 4 on-screen markers.
SmartView 4K offers essential tools for framing and focus, including safe area and title markers, plus 4 adjustable frame guides (2 vertical, 2 horizontal) for social media and film framing. Focus peaking, easily toggled with a front panel button, helps ensure perfect focus, especially for remote camera monitoring. All markers and overlays are customizable for any aspect ratio.
SmartView 4K supports 3D LUTs to correct washed-out colours or log film gamma in SDI and 2110 inputs, ensuring accurate colour reproduction. You can also apply creative 3D LUTs for unique looks. LUTs are easy to upload via the SmartView utility, and custom LUTs can be created by exporting DaVinci Resolve colour grades. Since DaVinci Resolve is free, you can build a library of LUTs at no cost.
The 12G-SDI and 10G Ethernet-based 2110 IP inputs support multi-rate resolutions, including SD, HD, and 2K for various uses like archive, broadcast, and feature films. Supported formats include NTSC, PAL, 720p, 1080p, 1080i, and 2K DCI in multiple frame rates. Additionally, both level A and B video standards are supported when connected to 3G-SDI sources.
SmartView 4K supports Ultra HD video standards on both 12G-SDI and 10G Ethernet 2110 IP inputs, including 2160p resolutions and 4K DCI formats up to 60fps. It’s the perfect monitor for transitioning to Ultra HD and 4K workflows. Plus, SmartView 4K can be software updated to support new television standards as they emerge.
SmartView 4K supports SMPTE‑2110 for IP video systems, with optical fiber and copper 10G Ethernet connections. It conforms to SMPTE‑2110-20 uncompressed video, Blackmagic IP codec for high-frame-rate Ultra HD, and SMPTE‑2110-21, -30, and -40 for timing, audio, and ancillary data. The selected video input can also be sent via the 10G Ethernet SMPTE‑2110 connection, supporting multicast to multiple destinations.
SmartView 4K supports NMOS interface specifications, enabling seamless operation of 2110 IP video devices as a virtual router. With Videohub Smart Control acting as an NMOS controller, it can route sources on 2110 IP networks. Supporting IS-04 for device discovery and IS-05 for connection management, SmartView 4K allows you to connect sources and destinations like a traditional SDI router.
SmartView 4K supports the Blackmagic SDI Tally Protocol, illuminating a red border for "on air" and a green one for "preview." Used with ATEM live production switchers, it allows you to connect the monitor to the switcher’s SDI outputs via a single BNC cable, simplifying setup and eliminating complex cabling. The tally information is sent directly through the SDI video feed, enabling quick transitions between cameras.
To change settings or update SmartView 4K, download the free SmartView Utility software from the Blackmagic Design support site. Available for both Mac and Windows, the software connects via USB or Ethernet. It allows you to customize the monitor's name, select 3G-SDI level A or B formatting, and enable Ethernet access (disabled by default for security).
Videohub offers a powerful remote control protocol for custom integration of SmartView 4K into broadcast systems. This simple, text-based protocol can be tested with a Telnet client, enabling custom control solutions on various platforms, including Raspberry Pi and Arduino. You can control LCD settings, tally, input selection, and activate 3D LUTs. To get started, log in with a Telnet app and use the SmartView 4K manual for command details.
SmartView 4K features a built-in power supply, eliminating the need for an external brick. It works with any AC mains outlet worldwide, supporting 100-240V AC. For added flexibility, it includes both AC and 12V DC power connections, ideal for backup power or battery use in remote locations. If the internal supply fails, you can connect an external DC power source to keep it running.
